Right to Roam

S&TA successfully lobbied the Countryside Agency for access to water to be removed from the Right to Roam debate and
left to voluntary agreements, but the fight is not over yet. The first two draft maps, covering the South East and
Lower North West, have been published, and their first consultation periods have ended. They were crude first attempts,
which required careful examination to ensure water really was really being excluded. Our information is that the
Countryside Agency is relying on the complaints procedure to improve the accuracy of its maps, and all S&TA
Branches have been placed on alert to check the fine detail of local maps as they are produced. This is a
perfect example of how membership of S&TA can influence issues at a local level.
