Salmon and Trout Association: Salmon and Trout Trust
Over the past three years, the Trust has supported a PhD student at the University of Stirling who has undertaken research into the problems caused by Argulus fish lice in stilll water trout populations. The Trust has also supported the North Atlantic Salmon Fund's efforts to buy-out mixed stock drift net fisheries so that numbers of salmon will be significantly increased on spawning redds to help protect the future of the species.
The Salmon & Trout Trust supports the Association in their Water Resources Programme, which enables every single application to abstract or discharge water in England and Wales to be monitored by the Association’s network of Branch Water Resource Officers (see Water Resources). This is a unique service offered by S&TA and is vital in the fight for the highest possible water quality in our aquatic environments. The Trust also supports the S&TA’s Riverfly Survey, click here for further details.
Historically, the Trust supported the Game Conservancy Trust’s work on trout habitat restoration on the River Piddle in Dorset, which has now become the bible for riparian owners and clubs who wish to improve habitat inside their fisheries. Other projects have included the use of barley straw to combat the growth of algae, and parasitical infestations of Highland brown trout populations.
