Moran Committee

Chaired by Lord Moran, past Chairman of the Salmon & Trout Association, the Moran Committee is the united voice for all the main fisheries and angling organisations in England and Wales over the Review of fisheries legislation.

When the Labour Party came to power in 1997, they ordered a complete review of all fisheries legislation. A review committee was formed, under the Chairmanship of Linda Warren, and S&TA’s then Chairman, Lord Moran, and staff determined that we would closely monitor the work of the Warren Committee and feed as much information into it as possible. Other leading angling and fisheries bodies, thirteen in all, were invited to form an advisory and monitoring group to shadow the legislative review, and this became known as the Moran Committee.

The Moran Committee produced consensus written and oral evidence at every stage of the review process. The importance of its work transpired when the Government published its response to the review, for they mentioned just two fisheries bodies in that document; the Environment Agency (EA) and the Moran Committee. Almost everything the Moran Committee lobbied for has either been addressed under secondary legislation, or is contained in the Marine Bill. The Committee continues to apply influence to the Government to ensure that the Bill is finally enacted onto the statute books.
