Association backs MP’s call for review of funding decision	8th Feb 2005
	The Salmon & Trout Association (S&TA) as members of the JAGB (Joint Angling Governing Bodies) has today, February 8, backed Martin Salter MP’s call for a review of the Sport England funding allocation for angling over the next four years. The £740,000 allocation, while representing a 37% increase over the previous period, nonetheless falls far short of both expectation and requirement. “This funding takes no account of the rod licence revenues generated from anglers, the considerable number of volunteers who help maintain waterways but, above all, disregards the planned programmes and projects included in the £2.4m Whole Sport Plan,” Paul Knight, S&TA Executive Director, declares. Knight adds, “Lack of funding also puts in jeopardy the ability of the Confederation of English Fly Fishers to enter first class quality teams into national and international competitions.” “Martin Salter rightly identifies angling as a major participant sport with an enviable record of social inclusion, especially in its successful programmes of targeting inner city children to divert them from crime and anti-social behaviour. Our plans to expand this further and to introduce some 200,000 new anglers to the sport are now in jeopardy. With Martin Salter, we are now urgently requesting Roger Draper, Chief Executive of Sport England, to reconsider this decision.”
