Leave a Legacy

With the S&TCUK, your Will will make sure things keep on happening - for years to come...

Writing a will is making sure loved ones enjoy the standard of living they are used to, for years to come.

But a will can be even more powerful.

It can speak out on issues that concern you today, long after you’ve gone.

With charitable status, the invaluable work of the Salmon & Trout Conservation UK isn’t simply focussed on preserving the health of our fish stocks. We also work tirelessly to help protect their environment. Gifts in wills are essential if the S&TCUK is to continue with this vital work.

Important!! Gifts to charity are exempt from Inheritance Tax (IHT) during your lifetime or as a bequest. If you leave more than 10 per cent of your estate to charity, any remainder over the IHT threshold (currently £325,000), will be taxed at a reduced rate of 36 per cent.

Checklist to ensure your intentions are clear - and carried out as you want them to be

These are some of the simplest but most important points you need to consider:

  • What do you have to pass on?
Make a list of your assets and liabilities to give you a good idea of the value of your estate. You may be surprised at how much there is to consider.
  • Who would you like to benefit?
Make a list of people, charities and organisations you want to benefit after your death.
  • Make sure you will is properly drafted and witnessed.
The law reports are full of case about inaccurate or invalid wills. Don’t leave all your assets to the lawyers by mistake. If in any doubt, use a solicitor to draft your will. Search online for a local solicitor if you don’t already have one - www.lawsociety.org.uk in England and Wales. In Scotland, visit www.lawscot.org.uk.
  • Once your will is made, remember to update it if your circumstances change.
Marital, financial and family changes may mean your will needs changing and can even invalidate existing wills. If there is a major change in your life, remember to have a look at your will afresh.
  • Keep it safe.
Leave your original will document with your solicitor and keep a copy yourself. Make sure your executors know where to find it.
