Flylife
What is the issue?
Riverflies, aquatic or land-borne, in larval, nymph or adult form, are essential food items for fish. Some flies are found only in very specific areas; others are widely distributed throughout the UK. Whether found in rivers, small streams, ponds, lakes or stillwaters, a healthy flylife provides a vital component of the aquatic food chain; conversely, absence or paucity of flylife is a key indicator that the waterway is suffering stress.
Ensuring the survival and health of this insect species is therefore of paramount importance to the S&TA.
We are one of the lead partners in the Riverfly Partnership, fully supporting its work with the Anglers’ Monitoring Initiative (AMI), research projects and programmes designed to promote a healthy fly life population.
